Grenoble – during March 2009, KST successfully commissioned a high quality power installation for the « European Synchrotron Radiation Facility ».
Whilst the beam is active, hundreds of researchers from all over the world carry out important tests in many different fields. Such as molecular biology, materials study, biomedical research, nanotechnology, etc. The loss of the beam would lead to the destruction of high technology equipment, the interruption of all research as well as hugh financial costs. In order to avoid this extremely damaging situation, the ESRF acquired a high quality power system called HQPS2 (High Quality Power Supply 2) developed and installed by KS Techniques of Belgium.
After extensive studies, KST designed a system to meet the very strict requirements of the ESRF regarding power supply and efficiency. This system consists of a medium voltage installation at 20 kV of 7 dynamic UPS Rotabloc® KPS-1600-50, protecting a load of 10.6 MW.
The installation has a feature called « Dynamic Autonomy Control » which allows the automatic speed adaptation of the Rotabloc® KPS relative to the load, whilst maintaining the minimum required autonomy and reducing losses.
During a mains cut of long duration, the « Black Out Protection » feature keeps the Synchrotron installation in stand-by mode whilst protecting its vital functions and allowing its quick restart.
